Understanding Indian Equity Benchmark & Sectoral Indices
Stock market indices represent the collective performance of selected baskets of securities designed to measure market sentiment, establish performance hurdles for mutual funds, and facilitate passive index investing.
Both the Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex utilize free-float market capitalization weighting. Shares locked by company promoters, government holdings, and strategic cross-holdings are excluded so the index reflects only shares actively available for public trade.
Broad indices (Nifty 50, Nifty Next 50, Nifty 500) provide well-diversified exposure across 14+ sectors. Sectoral indices (Nifty Bank, Nifty IT, Nifty Auto) isolate specific industry dynamics and exhibit higher volatility and cyclical drawdowns.
NSE Indices reconstitution occurs semi-annually in March and September. Eligibility mandates 100% trading frequency over 6 months, liquidity buffer, and inclusion in the F&O derivatives segment for top headline indices.
